| Evidence suggests that body piercings (including ear piercings) has been practiced by peoples all over the world from ancient times. Mummified bodies with piercings have been discovered, including the oldest mummified body discovered to date, which was found in an Austrian glacier. This mummy had ear piercings 7–11 mm in diameter. Nose piercings and ear piercings are mentioned in the Bible. In Genesis 24:22 Abraham 's servant gave an ear ring and bracelets to Rebekah, wife of his son Isaac. Nose piercings has been common in India since the 16th century. Tongue piercings were also popular with the elite of Aztec and Maya civilization, though it was carried out as part of a blood ritual and such piercings were not intended to be permanent. Ancient Mesoamericans wore jewellery in their ears, noses, and lower lips, and such decorations continue to be popular amongst indigenous peoples in these regions. Ear piercings has existed continuously since ancient times, including throughout the 20th century in the Western world. However, in many cultures within the United States, it became a relative rarity from the 1920s until the 1960s. At that time, it regained popularity among American women, and was eventually adopted by men in the hippie and gay communities, and later the punk rock culture. | |||||||||

| A tongue piercing goes right through the tongue. A single tongue piercing in the centre is the most common form, but more than one at a time is also common. Positioning of this tongue piercing is more difficult than most. Also the position of veins and nerves in the tongue to be pierced must be considered. The webbing beneath the tongue, known as the frenulum must be considered as well as the position of the jewellery in relation to teeth and gums. Reason is to lessen the risk of damage. Off-center tongue piercing can be more complicated as they pass through more muscle tissue (where as centre piercing pass through the space between the two muscles). Therefore off-center tongue piercing should be avoided due to excessive risk of damage. If the correct equipment is used, the tongue piercing itself is not as painful as you might think. Like most piercings, the pain, while uncomfortable, is over almost instantly. Expect, a large amount of swelling however in the first week or so afterwards, this can be extremely uncomfortable. This swelling must be accounted for by using a longer piece of initial jewellery to begin with, which can later be replaced by a shorter piece once the swelling has returned to normal. | |||||||||
